From Script To Screen: Influence Maps

Before I start thumbnailing character/prop/location designs, I wanted to make some influence maps that I could draw ideas from. I will likely end up collating ideas from each of these to make my definitive production design influence map.

For the wife character, I wanted to incorporate a lot of rounder, softer shapes so I looked at characters that I thought would be good to get ideas from. I also liked the idea of her having knitting needles in her hair the same way some people put pencils in their hair.

I wanted the bomb disposal character to have this sense of goofiness about him but also retain aspects from the military-like job that he retires from at the beginning of the story (which would be evident through his clothes and other minor details).

I decided to look at the interior and exterior of the hotel separately so I could look at them in slightly more depth. For the inside of the hotel, I looked at 'fancier' hotels, but for the outside, I just considered seaside towns that people would go to visit and that I've visited personally that seem like they fit the "quaint seaside town" idea.

For the scissors, I looked into antique sewing and embroidery scissors specifically. Mostly because it would make more sense for the wife character to be carrying this kind of scissor and because the 'antique' aspect adds to the fact that she and her husband are older characters.

Toolkit 1: Drawing: Session 11

The first part of today's lesson involved holding a long stick with charcoal taped on the end to draw 30 second and 1 minute poses so we were forced to keep a certain distance away from the page and deal with somewhat of a lack of control over the charcoal.

Toolkit 1: Animation: Lip Syncing (Part 2)

For this week's animation class, we had to use our X sheets and animations from last time to make a random character(s) fit the sound we chose from last week.

Toolkit 1: Character Design: Session 3

In this week's character design session, we were all given an animal to study, and then a second animal which we had to combine the first with. I was initially given 'giraffe', and then I was given 'kangaroo':

After that, we were paired up and given an environment. Between our pairs, we had to create a prey animal and a predator. I created a predator for a desert environment:

Toolkit 1: Animation: Animating to Music

A few lessons ago, we had to create an animation to a piece of music. I decided to revisit mine because I wasn't very happy with the initial version I had created and ended up with this as the result.

Toolkit 1: Character Design: Session 1

In last week's character design session, we had to experiment with shapes and simplifying characters. We were given different characters to experiment with (the challenge was to keep them still looking at least vaguely recognisable), and I received Donkey from the Shrek movies.

I started with minor simplifications of the shapes, and then I continued by making the shapes much less complex while still trying to make it look like the same character.

I then chose another character from the ones we were given and ended up with Honey Lemon from Big Hero 6. I started with two smaller sketches and then a third one (which I ended up going over in Photoshop).

Finally, we were assigned a theme and we had to make 5 or more characters from it using very basic shapes (triangles, circles, and squares). I was given "Roman Gladiator" as my theme.

Toolkit 1: Animation: Hat and Stick Animation

I did originally have this animation completed at the end of the last term, but I felt like I needed to rework it a little bit and correct a couple of mistakes. Here is the onion skin for the new version, and the original animation.
