We had our first life drawing session with Simon today; there wasn't a model, which meant that we were looking at the forms of objects laid out in front of us. We started out by doing small two or three minute sketches, trying to work as big as we could, before moving clockwise and working on someone else's canvas. At the end, we could see how different peoples' styles came together to create this result;
Then, we started looking at negative space surrounding the objects instead of the detail on them, trying to figure out how to block out the shapes' outlines.
This was followed by looking at the shadows and how we could recreate them using charcoal and other more prominent equipment to show the contrast between the lighting and the shade.
Finally, we started to focus on the detail. I specifically chose to continue using pencil and blocking out the shades as quickly as I could to get a feel of the shapes presented by the folding of the fabric. Then I went back with the time I had left and started to look at the different tones.
